Movie Night Thursday...

Today we worked to compare and order fractions during math. For SS the kids prepared for TOMORROW's test on chapter 8. After lunch, we had some JIJI time while the fourth graders were @ band. Then we worked more with the parts of speech, specifically pronouns and did a little punctuation and capitalization practice. Finally, we went outside for some much needed PE time. The CST test starts Tuesday. The first day is going to be a loooong one. Please be sure your son/daughter goes to bed 30 mins. early, gets a good night's sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, if they don't what the school serves) and arrives EARLY @ Johnson. This year is of even greater importance than usual because this test has a baring on your child's placement next year.

Tonight is Movie Night @ Johnson. We'll eat @ 5:30 and start "Despicable Me" at around 6ish. If you haven't preordered, it's not too late. You can just show up, eat and have fun. Bring the entire family. ALL are welcome.

Monday...5 school days left until the CST

Today wasn't a beautiful day in the neighborhood, but the kids handled it admirably. Many were gone to a safety outing, but those who were here worked to find equivalent fractions in math. During social studies, we read chapter 8 lesson 5 on the Declaration of Independence. After lunch, we finished our responses to "Two Were Left" by Hugh Cave and then went over our new spelling list. Afterwards, we did lesson 10 focusing on sentence skills in our Buckle Down CST practice books. Finally, we finished our Project LEAD letters and had some JIJI time. Please look out for 2 fliers sent home about activities to raise money for the fifth grade promotion activities. One is about Friday's pizza sale and the other is about Thursday's movie and spaghetti dinner. Finally, please come to the Rally For Education on Tuesday, May 24th, at 4:30 PM, in Balboa Park, on the corner of Park Blvd. and President’s Way to show your support for our schools!

Friday...

I returned after taking a day and a half off to travel home to MD to watch a former student graduate from high school to find the students had done well and enjoyed having Mr. Morehead as my substitute. Today the took a quiz on the meaning of fractions, fractions and division, as well as mixed numbers and improper fractions. They also were able to play a mixed numbers game that they seemed to really enjoy. The fourth graders started a new unit on adding and subtracting decimals. Then they worked on JiJi. After lunch, we took our spelling test and then had WHEEL. During WHEEL we went to computers, engineering and finally to science. A pizza order form sent for the CST kick-off Friday. Please send the form and money as soon as you can. Have a nice weekend!

Wednesday...

I'll be glad when it stops raining, as the kids are always weirded out when it does. Today we worked with mixed numbers and improper fractions in math while the fourth graders rounded decimals. After lunch, we read and discussed how author’s paint pictures with words. Finally, we reread and discussed “Two Were Left” to prepare for tomorrow’s response. Also, a flier was sent home about Johnson's first movie night on the 26th. Please try to attend and bring the entire family. It should be tasty and fun. I will NOT be here tomorrow and part of Friday. Mr Morehead will be our sub. We are fortunate to have him. I just hope it doesn't turn into "Lord of the Flies" while I'm gone.

Monday the 16th...My Favorite Day of the Week

How was your weekend? If it was like mine then it was too short:). For some reason the site was down and I couldn't access my blog on Friday, so I couldn't write. I'm sure you were crazy disappointed. Today we took an assessment on chapter nine in math. We'll spend the rest of the week on fractions. Grade four students worked with fractions and making a whole and had some JIJI time. After lunch, we received our new spelling lists and read about different literature types to help prepare for the CST, which is in 10 days. Finally we reread and discussed "Two Were Left" ,one of my favorite short narratives as it is so well written, and had some time on JIJI.

OOPS again! 12 school days until the CST

I had car issues this week so I haven't been as diligent w/ my blogging. I'm sure many of my thousands of followers were heartbroken that I missed a couple entries. Today we continued our work with prime factorization and introduced the concept of Greatest Common Factor. In SS/science the kids had a substitute, read " Blood Cells" and did a reading check. Afterwards, we took school pictures. All the kids were photographed and you can purchase the photos if they appeal to you. The students looked handsome and pretty today (and that was just the boys:). I almost didn't recognize some of them out of uniform. Finally, we continued with our activities to prepare for the CST by learning some critical reading skills.

19 days until the CST!

Today was short, but sweet. We practiced a few more Public Release Questions from past CST tests (see links for website) during math and then worked on proving or disproving generalizations. The fourth graders added and subtracted fractions with unlike denominators. The kids held it together nicely, inspite of the heat. I wish to say good luck to Lauryn Lang and Tania who are on their way to Florida with Mrs. Matthews to represent Johnson STEM @ a symposium. I sure they'll do wonderfully!

First Day Back!

I couldn't wait to get back. In fact, I couldn't sleep last night. I was like a kid on Christmas Eve :). Everything went well today, but by 12:00 most students looked like they needed to get some winks. In math we began preparing for the CST's by working on, and discussing, 4 public release questions. Then we learned about quadrilaterals. The fourth graders discussed adding and subtracting fractions. In social studies the kids checked over their break packets with Mr. Smith. After lunch, we received our new spelling lists and printed out our Project LEAD letters for tomorrow's gallery walk. Finally we reread and discussed the narrative "Eye of the Storm".
